The effectiveness
of biodiversity conservation is remarkable
The Yunnan Province has established a preliminary network
for ex-situ conservation and in-situ conservation for delivering
the work of protecting rare and endangered species.
At present, the Province has established several centers
for breeding wild animals, over 10 centers for saving wild
animals, and over 10 botanic gardens and arboretum for protecting
rare and endangered plants. In 1991, the Province established
a special centre for breeding rare and endangered plants
with the support of the State Environmental Protection Administration.
More than 180 species have been introduced and grown; Kunming
Zoology Institute under the China¨s Academy of Science has
collected the cells of over 200 endemic or rare and endangered
fauna in Yunnan, including Rhinopithecus yunnanensis, P.
t. amoyensis, Naemorhedus cranbrooki etc. The Province is
building the Yunnan Germplasm Bank for Wild Animals.
With the joint efforts from different parties, the rare
and precious species in Yunnan are brought under effective
protection. The number of these species is increasing to
some extent. For instance, the number of Grus nigricollis
in Zhaotong and Huize in the Northeast Yunnan, which is
attracted wide attention from domestic and international
community, is increased from over 800 in 1995 to over 1200.
The number of Hylobates concolor in Wuliangshan Nature Reserve
is increased to 400. The number of Rhinopithecus roxellanae
in Baimaxueshan Nature Reserve is increased to over 1000.
The number of Elephas maximus in Xishuanbana is increased
to about 250.
Overall,
a remarkable achievement has been made in the conservation
of rare and endangered species in Yunnan.
In
1995, the Provincial Government took the lead in establishing
Yunnan Biodiversity Conservation Commission in the country
to increase the efforts for conservation and management
of biodiversity.
