1.2 The Characteristics
of the Biodiversity in Yunnan
The biodiversity in Yunnan have three characteristics:
Richness.
The total area of Yunnan takes up 4% that of China but the
quantity of each category of species reaches almost or more
than one half that of China. The number of species of herb
medicine, flower and mushroom ranks top in China, same as
rare species resources, which amounts to 67.5% of the total
for China. Its diverse and unique types of ecological system
can be regarded as the epitome of world ecotypes.
Uniqueness.
Yunnan is also one of the regions having richest unique
species in the country. It has a big batch of relic, unique
and indigenous species.
Vulnerability.
Although Yunnan riches in wild species but the number of
each species, with narrow and limited habitats, is sparse.
So they are easy become endangered or extinct for natural
disaster or human interventions. Once be destroyed, most
of them would never be able to recover.
